A little diversion from the babies today. We had a car for the weekend, generously lent to us by Linda and David. We spent some time seeing the local sights. We drove an hour east of Edmonton to visit the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, an entire town preserved from the turn of the century, depicting life for the Ukrainian settlers in Alberta.
From there we drove on to Vegreville, home of the world's largest easter egg (a Ukrainian Pysanka). As we are driving up to the egg, there is only one other car in the parking lot, and it's a Ford GT (a very sexy, expensive sports car). I was far more interested in the car than the egg at this point. I'm looking around wondering who owns the car, as the only other person there is a tall scruffy gangly looking guy with his friend and a small video camera in front of the egg. Eccentric software billionaire? Rich son of an Alberta oil baron? Nope.. it's none other than Tom Green, Canadian born comic and ex husband of Drew Barrymore. We end up talking to him for a few minutes, and he interviews us for an internet talk show he is doing. Of all the places to see exotic cars and semi-famous people! Vegreville!
On Sunday it was off to West Edmonton Mall. More of an entertainment complex than a shopping mall, it was interesting. No great shopping that you could not get anywhere else, but seeing a roller coaster inside a mall was kind cool.
Abby's Mom flew into last night to spend the week here, as I will be back in Vancouver for the week until Friday.
Oh yeah.. the babies :-). Doing much better now that they have settled back on the respirator. Abby and I each held them for about an hour yesterday, and they are relaxed. Their oxygen levels are very good (Dillon is about 27%, and Madeleine is about 30%). They will likely stay intubated for the week and focus on weight gain and weening down the oxygen levels before they try breathing on their own again.
A few more pics of travels and babies..

Happy Thanksgiving to the Rivers Family!!!
Well, that was a much brighter update, thankyou very much!
Thanksgiving means more now that I know the wee ones are the right track again!
So glad to hear that you two got some down time! You must have that to keep up the emotional roller coaster that you're on!
And the fact that it was accidently noteworthy is hilarious.
Seeing that historical little village would have been something in itself (for me anyway), but to run into a celeb is just crazy!
I guess we're going to have long waits between updates if you're coming to Vancouver, eh David?
I hope not too long!
Again, the pictures are just priceless. Thankyou.
Love 'n hugs 'n kisses to you all,
Lil XOX
Hi David and Abby
Congratulations on your 2 little ones - they will do fine - you have a millionaires' family - a boy and a girl. Some of the memories of David come to mind - he was 3 lb 5 oz and down to 3 lbs - and look at him now -- technology has come a long way. Hope you are able to return to Vancouver soon. Thinking of you and will follow your updates.
take care
Carole
Glad to hear you've been able to take in some of the sights - hope you managed to get a great turkey dinner yourselves? Happy thanksgiving and keep hugging those precious little ones.
Linda
Hey Abby, just catching up on the blog today. Glad to hear that you're venturing out and exploring. That is pretty funny that you ran into Tom Greene - strange place. Well, you and David certainly had a lot to be thankful for this past weekend. Even though things aren't ideal, your babies are fighters and you're all together which is wonderful. Beautiful babies!! Talk soon! Gina
Hi David and Abby
I received your blog from the Stables and have been following your story for the past week. I'm pregnant(31 weeks and counting) and so the emotional gloves are off. Your family was in my thoughts over the Thanksgiving weekend and your strength admired by my family as I shared your story.
Keep writing and smooching those sweet peas!
Hi guys... Happy Thanksgiving to you and family.. Things are good here besides the weather of course, I am still looking for a job and Dave is happily hiking.. I am over joyed to hear things are going well.. hopefully you guys can soon get to a point where moving the kids is safe. So how was seeing the largest Ukrainian egg. I must admit its sounds pretty thrilling!! Dave would freak over you meeting Tom Green.. he has liked him since his conception.. I on the other hand know him well as he was a fixture in my home town...and have bumped into him in many a mall fountain..
Much love
D&L
Happy Thanksgiving you guys! Glad that you were able to get out and hit the road for a bit. The babies are adorable and look bigger everyday! Stay strong :))) Brian comes to visit this weekend with Lenka which will be nice. Still hoping you will be home in December so we can come meet the new family. Take care. Niki & Mike
